Barack Obama | You are this campaign

Friend --

As we count down to another critical fundraising deadline for this campaign, it's important to remember this:

We always knew this election would be about two competing economic plans -- whether we get to build on our progress or see it taken away.

But we had no idea we'd also be up against a social agenda that would roll back decades of progress, particularly for women's health.

That means the consequences of this election will be felt in more ways than we'd counted on -- and what you do this week will help decide what they are.

Will you donate $3 or more right now?

https://donate.barackobama.com/March-Deadline

Thank you,

Barack

P.S. -- My next dinner with supporters is coming up soon, and there's one spot left. Any donation you make today automatically enters you to join us.

Remarks by President Obama During Meet and Greet with Troops

March 25, 2012
Camp Bonifas

11:26 A.M. KST

THE PRESIDENT:  It's good to see you.  (Applause.)  Thank you.

Well, listen, I'm not going to give a long speech, because I just want to make sure that I get a chance to shake everybody's hands.  I just want to point out that I was just presented this spiffy jacket.  And so whoever arranged to make sure that it fit -- I'm sure it wasn't the General -- I appreciate it.  (Laughter.)

But as I told General Thurman and your commander here, you guys are the -- at freedom's frontier.  When you think about the transformation that has taken place in South Korea during my lifetime, it is directly attributable to this long line of soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen who were willing to create the space and the opportunity for freedom and prosperity.  And the contrast between South Korea and North Korea could not be clearer, could not be starker, both in terms of freedom but also in terms of prosperity.

And the reason that the South is doing so well is obviously attributable to the incredible resilience of their people and their incredible talents and hard work, but it also has to do with you guys.  And so my main message is the same, obviously, to every base that I go to all across -- all around the world, which is, I could not be prouder of what you're doing.  Everybody back home could not be prouder of what you guys do each and every day -- the dedication, the professionalism that you show.

But there's something about this spot in particular, where there's such a clear line and there's such an obvious impact that you have for the good each and every day that should make all of you proud.

And I'll just share with you real briefly -- last time I was here, I was having lunch with the President of South Korea, President Lee.  And he talked about how he was a small child when the Korean War was taking place and its aftermath, and the brutal poverty, the fact that they had nothing.  And he went on to be a auto executive and ultimately the President of his country, and watch it grow.  And he specifically said to me -- and this was a private moment; he didn't say this in front of the press, so you knew he meant it -- he said, the only reason that was able to happen -- and I still think back to all those American soldiers and the sacrifices that they made.

That's the legacy you're carrying on here.  So we're grateful to you.  We're proud of you.  And I hope that all your family back home knows how proud your Commander-in-Chief is of you.

And the only other thing I'll say is, for those of you guys who missed the ball games -- (laughter) -- Florida got beat by Louisville, and Ohio State just beat Syracuse.  So I don't know how your brackets are doing.  (Laughter and applause.)

But anyway, thank you, God bless you, and let me just shake some hands and take some pictures.  All right.  (Applause.)

Republicans are desperate to kill health care reform - stop them.

The best way to stop them? Donate to the Two Term Fund: https://my.barackobama.com/obamacarevid

Most candidates promise to do something great, even historic, on their first day in office.

But this year's Republican presidential candidates are oddly and singularly focused: They'd all repeal Obamacare on Day One, and take our health care system right back to where it was.

These candidates apparently don't care who would lose services, pay more, or instantly find themselves uninsured, because they've all placed their bets on this promise getting them into the White House.

The House Republican Budget - Infographic | The White House

Good morning --

Every day, you and your family make choices about how you spend your money and what investments you make. Leaders in Congress do the same thing when they draw up their budgets for the country. And if you spend some time with their plans, you learn what they value, you see the type of country they want America to be.

So when Congressman Paul Ryan put out a new budget for the House Republicans this week, we spent some time with it. We took a careful look and did the math.

Here's what we learned.

Republicans in Washington want to give millionaires and billionaires an average tax break of at least $150,000. They want to pay for those tax cuts by slashing programs that create jobs and protect our children, our seniors, and the veterans who have fought for the country. They want to end Medicare as we know it. And they want to undercut our economic strength by rolling back key investments in education, research, and our nation's roads and bridges.

President Obama believes we need to live within our means and that's why he put forward a balanced plan that reduces the deficit by more than $4 trillion. But the plan put forward by the GOP fails that test of balance.

To show you what we mean, we've put together an infographic that breaks out the kinds of priorities we'd have to give up for the $150,000 tax break that Republicans want to give to the nation's millionaires and billionaires.

The more people who share it, the more folks will understand what's at stake and how we can do better for the middle class.

Thanks,

David

President Obama Discusses Solar Power in Nevada | The White House

President Obama Delivers Remarks on Energy at the Copper Mountain Solar 1 Facility
President Barack Obama delivers remarks on energy after a tour of a Solar Panel Field at the Copper Mountain Solar 1 Facility, the largest photovoltaic plant operating in the country with nearly one million solar panels powering 17,000 homes, in Boulder City, Nevada, March 21, 2012. from Megan Slack  March 21, 2012, 07:59 PM EDT

Today, President Obama visited the Copper Mountain Solar 1 Facility in Boulder City, Nevada. The facility is the largest photovoltaic plant in the country, and its one million solar panels power 17,000 homes in California.

Boulder City, a small town near Las Vegas with fewer than 20,000 residents, was initially established to house the workers building the Hoover Dam. Today, the sun shines on Boulder City 320 days each year, making it an ideal place for a massive solar facility. Construction began in 2010, and hundreds of local residents now have jobs because of the plant. Things are going so well, in fact, that a second and third Copper Mountain facility are in the works, which will eventually generate enough electricity to power 45,000 and 66,000 homes, respectively.

Across the country, businesses like the one that built Copper Mountain are developing enough solar energy to power 730,000 homes.

Increasing the use of renewable energy sources like solar power is one piece of President Obama’s strategy to develop every available source of American-made energy. Since he took office, federal investment in renewable energy has helped nearly double its use across the country. And as a result, we are reducing our dependence on foreign oil and becoming more energy independent, creating jobs, and keeping our environment clean.

U.S. Giving $12 Million in Aid to Assad’s Victims | IIP Digital

David Cameron and President Obama at podium (AP Images)

By Stephen Kaufman | Staff Writer | 15 March 2012

Prime Minister David Cameron and President Obama said the United States and the United Kingdom are focused on getting humanitarian aid into Syria.

Washington — Along with joining the Arab League and others in the international community in pressing Bashar al-Assad to end the violence in Syria and agree to a peaceful political transition, the Obama administration is also providing more than $12 million in humanitarian relief for the Syrian people.

According to a March 15 State Department fact sheet, the aid is being directed through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the World Food Programme (WFP) and other nongovernmental organizations.

The fact sheet noted that on March 14, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization issued a special alert over the state of food security in Syria, particularly for vulnerable groups. The WFP estimates that 1.4 million people face food insecurity due to the ongoing violence.

UNHCR and the ICRC, which are receiving $5.5 million and $3 million, respectively, in U.S. funds, are “delivering critical medical services and supplies, food, water, blankets, hygiene kits and heaters to the Syrian people,” the fact sheet said.

The U.S. funding “will also provide support for host families who are sheltering displaced Syrians due to the ongoing violence and to those who have fled to neighboring countries,” it added.

The WFP is planning to provide aid to 100,000 Syrians who have been affected by the now yearlong civil conflict by providing food rations to “displaced Syrians and host families, households that have lost breadwinners or livelihoods, female-headed households, and unaccompanied minors,” according to the fact sheet.

Approximately $3 million of the U.S. funding has been designated for the WFP. The organization has been able to deliver 16,850 family food rations — sufficient to feed approximately 84,000 people for one month — to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent’s warehouses. The Red Crescent has, in turn, distributed 7,415 WFP food rations to beneficiaries over the past month, but several of the worst-affected areas “remain inaccessible due to insecurity,” the fact sheet said.

In addition, the Obama administration is working to boost existing stockpiles of humanitarian supplies and equipment in the region that can be delivered to vulnerable and besieged Syrian communities as access and conditions allow, the fact sheet said.

ONE YEAR SINCE PEACEFUL PROTESTS BEGAN

March 15 marks the one-year anniversary since Syrians first gathered to protest the arrests of schoolchildren in the town of Deraa after graffiti criticizing Assad appeared there.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters March 15 that the anniversary marks “a particularly horrific and violent day,” as security forces responded to those initial protests with brutal force.

“As the peaceful protests have grown, the Assad regime has become more and more bloody and violent vis-a-vis its own people, has gone into town after town trying to suppress the violence with guns rather than sitting and talking with its own people,” Nuland said. The United Nations estimates that more than 7,500 Syrians have been killed over the past year.

The United States and others have responded to the crackdown by increasing their sanctions against the Assad regime, with “more and more countries closing the noose on Syria, refusing to trade, refusing to conduct normal diplomacy, refusing to allow normal flights and commerce,” Nuland said, adding that the Obama administration will “keep up the pressure until the Syrian people achieve their objective.”

Nuland also said the United States has no reason to believe that email messages reportedly from Assad and leaked to the U.K. paper The Guardian earlier March 15 are “anything but authentic,” and she said the messages “tell an amazing tale” of the Syrian ruler.

“Far from being detached from what his military is doing, Assad seems to take pride in the viciousness of his own security forces. And he seems to make fun of the idea of actually sitting down and talking with his people,” she said.

The leak “really illustrates the character of this guy … and why he has lost legitimacy not only in the eyes of his people but in the eyes of the international community,” Nuland said.

A National Day of Honor Iraq Timeline | The White House

Friends,

Yesterday, the President issued a proclamation regarding a National Day of Honor, recognizing the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women who fought in Iraq and their families.

As we’ve welcomed these service members home, we must continue to do our part as a Nation to ensure they have the care, benefits and opportunities they’ve earned through their service. President Obama’s enduring commitment to support our service members and their families has led to unprecedented efforts across the federal government to improve the quality of life for those who wear the uniform and their families.

Send your message of thanks
Below are just a few of the strides we've made for veterans and military families since the beginning of this Administration:

  • To better align government resources to support military families and veterans, President Obama issued Presidential Study Directive 9. This directive has resulted in the mobilization of the whole of the federal government to better support military families and veterans. DOJ and HHS are collaborating on improving Veterans Treatment Courts, the Department of Labor is organizing outreach to military spouses, and more.
  • The President signed into law and has ensured successful implementation of an assistance program for caregivers of Veterans who incurred a serious injury in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001. And recent amendments to the Americans With Disability Act (ADA) expands employment protections for wounded warriors and disabled veterans.
  • The First Lady and Dr. Biden launched Joining Forces - a comprehensive national initiative to mobilize all sectors of society to give our service members and their families the opportunities and support they have earned. Joining Forces was designed to energize action from every sector of our society – individuals, businesses, non-profits, philanthropy and faith-based institutions – to give service members, veterans and their families the support they have earned. We celebrate the 1 year anniversary of Joining Forces this April!
  • On August 5, 2011, President Obama announced new commitments to service members and veterans that will provide a comprehensive plan to lower veteran unemployment and ensure that service members leave the military career-ready through hiring tax credits, private sector commitments, and reforms that improve the way we prepare, train, and educate service members for life after the military. The President recognizes that hiring veterans is good for a company’s bottom line. He challenged the private sector to hire 100,000 veterans– and we’re happy to report that they’ve accepted that challenge.
  • On November 21, 2011 the President signed into law a comprehensive package that will aggressively attack the unacceptably high rate of veteran’s unemployment. The VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 will expand veterans tax credits; improve the transition assistance program (TAP); facilitate seamless transition; expand education & training; and translate military skills and training. Through executive order, the President established the Veterans Job Bank, MyNextMove and the Veterans Gold Card. You can learn more about these programs at www.whitehouse.gov/vets.
  • Under the President’s leadership, the Secretary of the Army John McHugh announced that, by April 2012, the length of most unit operational deployments will go from 12 months to 9 months. The reduced deployment length will improve soldier and family quality of life while continuing to meet operational requirements and is an important step in sustaining the all-volunteer-force.
  • The President signed into law the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act, which funds the VA’s health care budget a year in advance. This landmark legislation will assure timely, sufficient, and predictable funding from year to year. For veterans, it means improved access to the doctors, nurses, and medical care that they need.
We are proud of all of these accomplishments, but we are also well aware that much work remains to be done. The President has made it clear that this country will continue to honor its commitment to our veterans as they return home. Their families, too, deserve our respect and our support. Military families have endured challenges the likes of which many of us can only imagine, all in service of their country. You can find ways to honor their service and thank them by visiting our Get Involved site.

All the best,

2nd Nuclear Security Summit
March 26 - March 27, 2012
Seoul, Korea

The "2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit" will be the largest summit in the security field that discusses international cooperative measures to protect nuclear materials and facilities from terrorist groups, with participation from more than 50 heads of state and international organizations. Issues to be discussed at this summit are:

- Cooperative measures to combat the threat of nuclear terrorism

- Protection of nuclear materials and related facilities

- Prevention of illicit trafficking of nuclear materials

The 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit will serve as an opportunity for Korea to earn international recognition on its enhanced status following its hosting of the G20 Seoul Summit in 2010. In addition, the summit will serve as a forum for discussion not only of the issue of nuclear security, but also of its interface with nuclear safety which became the focus of renewed attention following the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Korea has established its status as an advanced country by securing the hosting of a whole range of international meetings in the economic, cultural, and sports fields including the hosting of the 2010 G20 Seoul Summit. The holding of the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit means that Korea has gained even greater standing in the international community in the security field as well. In addition, it is meaningful that Korea will play a leading role in establishing global governance in the security and political fields just as it played a significant role in the economic field through the hosting of the 2010 G20 Seoul Summit.
